Final thesis for Architecture Degree

My final thesis was about Urban housing and revitalization, in the context of a post apartheid Johannesburg. On a broader level, it looked at the Urban redevelopment policies and access to housing for the new South African context and the reality facing the new ANC government. Here I argued for “City lead change, meaning urban mass housing projects as infill projects, as well as planned high rise new districts, but always consolidating and trying to repair the central city, which in apartheid planning had almost no one living. On another level I tried to look at the possibilities of mixed use residential buildings in the city, with all the problems and benefits of urban dwelling. The project proposed small service industry warehouses and workshops with a school above and community center above, with housing above the school. The project was located in the Johannesburg inner-city between the former CBD and a high density predominantly white neighborhood. Theoretically I also looked at apartment buildings as a typology as its various mutations and the language of architecture and how buildings can be made legible for use especially where spatial “backgrounds” and readings are different. I received 75% for my final mark.
